A Movie I Want to See

Hey a friend of mine sent me this link to a movie playing at the Tribeca Film Festival. I want to get a copy!

"Director Niels Arden Oplev rises to the challenge of representing the Witnesses, who are well known for their door-to-door proselytizing but perhaps not so well understood. He does so with complexity instead of the easy demonizing that such stories often resort to, and he compassionately portrays all that Sara will lose if she chooses to leave the congregation. He transforms Sara from a zealot into a thoughtful and brave young woman, all the while alluding to the often mercurial nature of teenage girls. The overall cast brings sensitivity to the varied characters, with Rosalinde Mynster giving an amazing and sensitive performance as Sara, a girl who is both serious and wise beyond her years."

--David Kwok

Director Niels Arden Oplev's Statement:

"In April 2006, shortly after the opening of We Shall Overcome, I happened to read a newspaper article about this girl Tabita's upbringing in a family deeply committed to the beliefs and standards of the religious sect Jehovah's Witnesses. Her fate and “journey” made a great impression on me and the things she had gone through touched me in both an emotional and intellectual way. I arranged meetings with Tabita, who is still in her early 20s, and here she spoke accurately and openly. Every detail was still crystal clear in her memory. The way she talked about her life was so honest and captivating that my fingers were itching to get started on the writing. The script follows Tabita's story as closely as possible, and even though bits and pieces have been added and removed, Tabita's story was in itself so well composed that the film all in all diverges only very little from the reality that she described to us."

Hmmm. It's in Danish, too. I love subtitles! Srsly.

Anyone remember cheese danishes at the assemblies? That was the only thing I liked about assemblies.

cheese danishes were the bomb! they would always run out, and the apple ones were such a distant second. i must confess, i also greatly enjoyed washing down one of the original bologna hoagies with a generic lemon-lime soda. too bad witnesses are too cheap to make the donation system work for concessions, switching over to packed lunches really did gut most of the charm those weekend-long hypno-fests had.

And this will certainly "date" me but I remember back in-the-day when they actually served hot meals at the conventions. As teen, I loved volunteering for kitchen duty so my friends and I could hang out, talk and laugh during the program and still be good little witnesses.

I remember hot meals at the Norco assembly hall.....but my mom was way to fussy, we never ate them, always just got the roast beef sandwich and a danish. Yeah, the apple danishes: not so good.

OMG(not OMJ) The danishes were all right BUT how about soft ice-cream cones? Or bringing a stash of candy to aleviate some of the brain numbing boredom.......hmm I wonder where my struggles with junk food came from...=)

i always went back for an extra tapioca pudding, and every time i wondered if that technically made me a glutton.

now that im thinking about it, there were quite a few sweeties on the assembly menu. sugary pop, three flavors of pudding, two types of danish (and they were pretty "moist" as far as packaged danishes go). ive heard that cults sometimes use a low-protein diet to soften up their throngs. the hoagies were mostly bread, and i suppose the milk had a little protein. can anybody else think of anything with protein, or did i just have bad eating habits?

Yes! I want to see this film, too (as a lover of docs AND as a former
Witness). Too bad it is not on Netflix. I wonder how to see it...

I sent an email to the Sales Office and was told that they don't have an American distributor for the film yet. Hopefully soon. We'd have to have someone bring it over from Denmark. I have a friend living over there, maybe I can talk him into buying one for me.
