I don't know what made me start looking things up over the weekend but I found a website with some ex-JWs stories thought I'd share that first before posting the actual topic.

www.jwfiles.com/jws-leavin...leaving.htm

anyway, like I was saying in the subject line quoted from their own bible. 2 Corinthians 2:6 "This rebuke given by the majority is sufficient for such a man, 7 so that, on the contrary now, YOU should kindly forgive and comfort [him], that somehow such a man may not be swallowed up by his being overly sad. 8 Therefore I exhort YOU to confirm YOUR love for him. 9 For to this end also I write to ascertain the proof of YOU, whether YOU are obedient in all things."

"...that somehow such a man may not be swallowed up by his being overly sad" How many people have committed suicide after being disfellowshipped or disassociated? Granted many do kill themselves while STILL JWs too but the whole shunning process JWs do can't help, besides as verse 8 says right at the beginning "Therefore I exhort YOU to confirm YOUR love for him" (Capitalization thanks to NWT) how is shunning a person confirming your love for them?

  • That's the scripture they use to support public reproof, not disfellowshipping.

The disfellowshipping scripture is 2 John 9-11: " Everyone that pushes ahead and does not remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God. He that does remain in this teaching is the one that has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, never receive him into your homes or say a greeting to him. For he that says a greeting to him is a sharer in his wicked ways."

45 years of having those scriptures drilled into me has left its mark...some things I doubt I will ever forget...I don't believe it anymore but I haven't forgotten the dogma.

    • 45 years? wow, I thought I was in it long at a week under 20 years

"The disfellowshipping scripture is 2 John 9-11: " Everyone that pushes ahead and does not remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God. hmmm.... okay, I disassociated myself so the elders never threw those scriptures out there. I just assumed after reading it. The funny thing is the scripture I quoted was about a guy guilty of incest and he only got reprooved and the scripture you quoted could be used to say that JWs shouldn't "...say a greeting" to anyone not a JW whether they left or not.

Cop pulls over JW on the highway
Cop: "Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?"
      JW: "...."
Cop: "Sir, are you ignoring me?"
      JW: "...."
Cop: "Sir, why are you ignoring me?"
JW: *pulls out New World Translations of the Holy Scriptures, turns to 2 John 9-11 and points to where the officer's supposed to read*
